What is SR22 Insurance?

This type of insurance is a regular auto insurance policy with an SR22 filing attached to it. The SR22 filing certifies to the state of California that you have purchased the required coverage to be legal to drive. Your insurance company will typically electronically file the SR22 form to the state on your behalf after you purchase a policy. You will typically be required to keep the SR22 policy active for a set period of time as set forth by the state of California. If you let your policy cancel or expire within that time frame your driver license will get suspend. It is important to check with the California DMV to find out the exact date your SR22 is no longer required.

How much does SR22 Insurance Cost in California?

SR22 Insurance in California varies drastically depending on your location, driving record, claims history, and age. In most cases SR22 policies are more expensive because insurance companies think you are a high risk driver. It is important to shop around and get quotes from multiple insurance carriers to make sure you are getting a good rate. Over time your insurance rate should come down as things fall of your driving record. When your SR22 is no longer required and you have a clean driving record, your insurance rates should be back to normal.

Can I purchase SR22 insurance if I do not have a vehicle?

Yes in most cases you can purchase a non-owners SR22 policy to satisfy the SR22 requirement if you do not own a vehicle. It is important to note that this type of policy has restrictions and might not provide coverage in certain situations. Named non-owner policies provide the required liability coverage while you are operating non-owned vehicles. This type of policy does not provide coverage for any vehicle you own, regularly operate, or have regular use of. In most cases this type of policy will also exclude coverage while you are operating a vehicle owned by a relative. If you are required to have an ignition interlock device to get your driver license reinstated you would not be eligible for a non-owner policy as you will need to have a vehicle to have it installed on. Whatever vehicle you are operating should also be insured by whoever owns it. Named non-owner policies do not provide physical damage coverage for the vehicle you are operating as this is the responsibility of the vehicles owner. It is important to read your policy carefully and discuss all coverage with your agent to be sure you understand this type of coverage.
